Last weekend we had free, so Patrick, another student on my program, and I booked it out of Empangeni to go to two game reserves--Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and Mkuze, both located in the northern section of our province. Because it wasn't an official "safari" (we were just driving around in our own car), I honestly wasn't expecting a whole lot. But typical Africa: we paid the equivalent of probably $10, were handed a map and subsequently allowed free rein with giraffe, monkeys, zebras, so many impala I got tired of seeing them, water buffalo, the endangered white rhino (for which Hluhluwe is famous for bringing back from the brink of extinction), and landed ourselves in a herd of close to 200 elephants.
One of our first big sightings--two warthogs. They were completely unfazed by our presence and continued to pig out.
Stumbled upon a few elephants...
...only a couple hundred or so. We followed the whole herd and watched them migrate through a valley to another section of the park.

yay i am comment # 1
